Synopsis: As restorative dentists, we are always seeking to create esthetic, long lasting restorations. The development of new dental ceramics has created a market place filled with different options with improve strength and beauty. The goal of this lecture will be to discuss the different ceramics available to us, including their strengths and weaknesses and review their specific clinical indications and contraindications for use. Furthermore, we will review current dental cements, discuss the difference between bonding and luting agents, and outline the indications for use of these different cements based on the current dental literature.

The Clinician: Dr. K. Sutton was born and raised in the lower mainland. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 2002 and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 2007 from the University of British Columbia. Dr Sutton practiced general dentistry for five years in Toronto, Ontario, during which time he realized his inclination to specialize and pursued a Postdoctoral Prosthodontics Residency Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 2015, Dr Sutton completed his residency and acquired his certificate in prosthodontics and Masters of Science degree in Dental Sciences. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Sutton successfully challenged both the Canadian and American Prosthodontic Board exams to earn the title of Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and Diplomat of the American Board of Prosthodontics. Dr. Sutton maintains prosthodontics specialty practices in Vancouver and Langley BC. In addition, he is a clinical instructor at UBC dental school, and a staff prosthodontist at the Vancouver General Hospital, Department of Dentistry, providing prosthodontic care to hospitalized and medically compromised patients.
