Topic: “Laser Dentistry for Kids: Is pain free and needle free restoration really possible?”

Synopsis: A CO2 laser can perform hard and soft tissue procedure without local anesthetic – no needle! This adds some excitement to our existing tool box of chair-side behaviour management, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and general anesthesia that are routinely used in pediatric dentistry. Besides prevention, one of the most important things in pediatric dentistry is to prepare our little ones with motivation to care for their oral health in the long run. Studies have shown that when the experience in childhood in dentistry is positive, people are more likely to carry forward good oral hygiene practice and routine dental care in adulthood. As a specialist, I have no problem doing dentistry the traditional way, but I am excited to share with you the science behind a CO2 laser and its application in pediatric dentistry that’s shaping a brand-new experience.

The Clinician: Dr. Raylien Chao, DDS MS FRCD©., is a board-certified pediatric dentist in Canada and the U.S. She obtained her B.S. degree in Economics at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010. Upon graduation, she found her true passion in “people” and prevention and took a turn in her career. She received a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition from Columbia University in 2011 and later graduated from University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2015 with High Distinction. She completed her pediatric specialty training as the chief resident at NYU Langone Health Center in Florida. During the school years, Dr. Chao founded the Student Chapter of Public Health Dentistry and served on the board for 3 years actively involved in community service. Dr. Chao became a Vancouverite in 2017 and is the current Vice President of the BC Society of Pediatric Dentists (BCSPD). She has two young daughters who have been happily taken every second of her free time outside of work. Otherwise, Dr. Chao enjoys guitar, karaoke, and hikes around the beautiful BC.

Suzanne has built a strong practice in access and privacy law. She advises both public and private sector employers on their responsibilities as they navigate the implications of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and other related legislation. Suzanne regularly provides one-on-one training to in-house privacy and access coordinators on responding to access requests, conducting internal investigations, and the use of internal system information. In addition to privacy law, Suzanne has extensive experience in education and health law. Suzanne has represented various healthcare and educational professionals and organizations, providing advice in a range of areas including employment, professional regulatory proceedings and compliance, court and administrative tribunal proceedings, procurement, and contract negotiations.

Synopsis: Having a correct diagnosis is of utmost importance in the practice of dentistry. One can argue that this is even more so the case in Endodontics as failure to properly diagnose will result in the delay of treatment, leading to inadequate resolution of pain and infection. During this pandemic, there are anecdotal reports that patients are experiencing more cracked or fractured teeth. Longitudinal fracture, a term that encompasses both cracked and fractured teeth, is a potentially vexing problem that is challenging to diagnose and manage. In this case-based lecture, Dr. Lin will review the current endodontic diagnostic terminology and discuss the assessment and management of longitudinal fractures.
After the lecture, the participants should:
- Know the current endodontic diagnostic terminology describing the pulpal and periapical status
- Be able to differentiate clinical and radiographic findings that mimic, but are not related to, endodontic pathoses
- Methods of recreational consumption
- Understand the classification describing the various types of longitudinal fractures
- Gain insight in the assessment, management and determination of prognosis associated with different types of longitudinal fractures
The Speaker:
Dr. James Lin, D.D.S., M.Sc., Diploma in Endodontics, F.R.C.D. (C)., is a certified specialist in Endodontics. He started university education at the University of Toronto and was accepted to both of its medical and dental schools. Dr. Lin elected to pursue dental training and received numerous academic awards, including being top of his class and graduating with honours in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. After graduation, he practiced general dentistry for 12 years before embarking on his specialty training at the University of British Columbia (UBC) where he
received a Diploma in Endodontics and M.Sc. in Craniofacial Science. He is a clinical associate professor and served as the Director of Endodontics for the Doctor of Dental Medicine program at
UBC for 6 years. His endodontic research and academic work had been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and he co-authored two textbook chapters. Dr. Lin maintains a private practice in Vancouver specializing in Endodontics.
