Topic: “What You Need to know about Digital Impressions”

Synopsis: Dental impressions are utilized and seen in almost every corner of dentistry. As the crucial first step of any record making process, the impression must be accurate and effective in being a true replica of an original. Since the first hydrocolloid impression in 1937, the principles of this record making process have remained largely unchanged, until now. The recent resurgence of digital impressions is revolutionary, but because of the multitude of choices and options, the technology has led to more confusion then conversion. This session aims to address some of the misunderstandings that has clouded this technology and bring clarity to the topic by evaluating some the current evidence that exists regarding accuracy, efficiency and reliability. The use of this technology will not only increase efficiency and productivity in the general practice today, but will dramatically improve outcomes that will benefit both the clinician and the patient. As this emerging technology continues to develop, along with the marked increase in digitization of the various aspects of dentistry, knowledge of this topic is not only important, but is a necessity.

The Clinician:Dr. Jonathan A. Ng,BMedSc, DDS, MSc, Dip. Pros., FRCD(C) is a Certified Specialist in Prosthodontics. He earned his Bachelor of Medical Sciences and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees at the University of Alberta. Following completion of a general practice residency, he continued at the University of Alberta Hospital as a staff dentist treating medically compromised patients in a clinical and operating room setting. He also managed a rural practice in Elk Point, Alberta. Dr. Ng is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UBC Department of Dentistry where he received his Diploma in Prosthodontics and Masters of Science degree. He is also on staff as a clinical Prosthodontist at the BC Cancer Agency in both Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, delivering multifaceted prosthodontic care to medically complex patients. Dr. Ng has been involved in international aid missions with a strong desire to help those in underdeveloped countries. When not practicing dentistry, he enjoys photography, playing the guitar and snowboarding. Dr. Ng’s private practice is with Dr. Chris Wyatt at their office on West Broadway in Vancouver, Canada. He focuses his private practice on complex prosthodontics, which includes the surgical placement and restoration of dental implants. He also has a significant interest in the area of digital dentistry such as digital impressions and the digital workflow.

SYNOPSIS: In recent years, there has been a wave of corporatization in the field of dentistry. Many of the solo/group practitioners are beginning to feel the changing tide. Is this the inevitable? Are we losing our autonomy as clinicians? What does corporatization mean for our profession or, more importantly, the public? In this CE forum, we have speakers from the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, BC Dental Association, and “My Practice Matters”. Each party will present and discuss different aspects of corporatization in dentistry. At the end of the forum, there is a designated open forum which is open to the members and attendees for their pressing questions.

He worked as a general dentist for 10 years before returning to school to complete his graduate training in Endodontics and MSc degree in Craniofacial Science at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia in 2012. For the past 10 years, Dr. Lin has been involved in endodontic teaching and research at UBC and has been the recipient of numerous academic and teaching awards. Currently, Dr. Lin is the Director of Undergraduate Endodontics at UBC and maintains his private practice specializing in endodontics in Vancouver and New Westminster.

Synopsis: When do we need to remove impacted teeth? When is the best time? The objectives of this lecture is to review the indications, treatment planning and risk and benefits for removal of impacted teeth. Also techniques for removal will be discussed as well as complications that can occur. Finally we will review the adjunctive methods for patient comfort during the procedure.
The Clinician:Dr. Kenneth Chow is a Certified Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with practices in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond. He recently started OMS group with Dr. Jason Choi and Dr. David Yang. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC and Assistant Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UBC and has been teaching since 1996. He is presently the Chair of the Ethics Committee at CDSBC. He is also on staff at VGH, UBC Hospital, BC Cancer Agency and involved in teaching in the GPR program. He is a mentor of the Greater Vancouver Study Club and has lectured in many conferences, CE courses, and study clubs. Ken completed his dentistry at University of Southern California and his Specialty training at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He continues to enjoy teaching others the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and other areas of Dentistry that can ultimately improve patient care.
Dr. Jason Choi is a Certified Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery who provides the full scope of surgical treatment for the oral-facial complex. Dr. Choi completed his dental education at the University of Southern California in 2003. After graduation he completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at Montefiore Medical Center in New York in 2011. He is also a member of the medical staff at BC Children’s Hospital providing emergency services. Currently Dr. Choi teaches at UBC Dental School and travels to the Queen Charlotte’s First Nation Band Dental Clinics to teach the UBC GPRs.
Dr. David Yang is the Provincial Practice Leader in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the BC Cancer Agency. He is the co-founder and co-president of the ITI Vancouver Implant Study Club. He also lectures regularly for the general practice residents, pathology residents, prostho residents and dental students at VGH & UBC. Dr. Yang received his dental degree from University of Toronto. He completed both his General Practice Residency as well as his Oral Surgery Residency at Cornell Medical Center.

James has had extensive international experience speaking to health professionals and consumers about the use of medication, presenting over 300 seminars on drug therapy over the past 20 years. His focus is on informed decision-making, using evidence-based information and rational therapeutic principles. He has been an editor for two internationally recognized text books on rational drug therapy ad has published over 100 articles. James is co-host of a very popular weekly podcast called the Therapeutics Education Collaboration (TEC). It can be found at therapeuticseducation.org. He is a professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC.
