We hope to show you why this may add some new value or dimension to your scope of practice as an example of how it has continued to uphold and fulfill the lifelong community-wide Monarch mission to “Build healthy happy smiles that last a lifetime”.
Dr John Hung co-founded Monarch in 1997, the practice of which has grown to several locations and five additional partners, with associates to aid in the Monarch mission. Collectively, they are Fellows of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and/or Diplomates of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. They have served the community at UBC as clinical assistant professors and educators, and serving on staff at BC’s Children’s Hospital. In organized dentistry, their combined accolades include having served or are currently attending a post in the BC Society of Pediatric Dentists, affiliations with the RCDC as board examiners, scientific committee officer membership of the American/Canadian Academies of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as participation in clinical practice-based research in collaboration with UBC Dentistry.

Synopsis: In this presentation, Dr. Sandra Tai will demonstrate how recent innovations in clear aligner technology now allows the orthodontist to treat a wide variety of malocclusions such as deep bite, anterior open bite, Class II, Class III and premolar extraction cases with clear aligners. Following Dr. Sandra Tai’s lecture, Dr. Brandon Huang will present independently treated cases to demonstrate when appropriate clear aligner techniques are applied, treating complicated malocclusion with clear aligners is a reality to practitioners today.

The Speaker: 1. Dr. Sandra Tai was born in Aldershot, England. She received her graduate training in Orthodontics at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA and graduated with a Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science degree in 1990. Dr Sandra Tai currently practices with her two associates, Dr. Brandon Huang and Dr. Charlene Tai Loh, in Richmond and Burnaby, BC. Dr Sandra Tai has been an Invisalign certified orthodontist since 2000 and is currently an Invisalign Top 1%/ Diamond Plus Provider who has treated over 1,700+ cases with Invisalign. She was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics at the University of British Columbia since 1996, teaching in both undergraduate and graduate orthodontic programs. Dr Tai is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Aligner Orthodontics and the author of the textbook “Clear Aligner Technique”. She is an international speaker and educator, and has lectured at universities and dental conferences all over the world. 2. Dr. Brandon Huang received his DDS from Columbia University School of Dental Medicine and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science. He is a part-time undergraduate clinical instructor at UBC and is currently under training to become an examiner at the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

Synopsis: As restorative dentists, we are always seeking to create esthetic, long lasting restorations. The development of new dental ceramics has created a market place filled with different options with improve strength and beauty. The goal of this lecture will be to discuss the different ceramics available to us, including their strengths and weaknesses and review their specific clinical indications and contraindications for use. Furthermore, we will review current dental cements, discuss the difference between bonding and luting agents, and outline the indications for use of these different cements based on the current dental literature.

The Clinician: Dr. K. Sutton was born and raised in the lower mainland. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 2002 and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 2007 from the University of British Columbia. Dr Sutton practiced general dentistry for five years in Toronto, Ontario, during which time he realized his inclination to specialize and pursued a Postdoctoral Prosthodontics Residency Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 2015, Dr Sutton completed his residency and acquired his certificate in prosthodontics and Masters of Science degree in Dental Sciences. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Sutton successfully challenged both the Canadian and American Prosthodontic Board exams to earn the title of Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and Diplomat of the American Board of Prosthodontics. Dr. Sutton maintains prosthodontics specialty practices in Vancouver and Langley BC. In addition, he is a clinical instructor at UBC dental school, and a staff prosthodontist at the Vancouver General Hospital, Department of Dentistry, providing prosthodontic care to hospitalized and medically compromised patients.

Synopsis: Regardless of the orthodontic clinician’s background, treatment philosophy, or geographic location, predictability and repeatability of favorable treatment outcome is universally desirable by all orthodontists. The Carriere Motion Appliance (CMA) has been introduced for over a decade in North America, and its myriad uses to correct various aspects of a malocclusion have been thoroughly explored.

 

The Clinician: Dr. Khaled A. Sharaf, began his University studies at Concordia University in Montreal where he obtained a bachelors degree in cell biology. Afterwards, he completed his degree in dentistry at McGill University in 2001. After graduation, he went on to pursue a combined dental residency at the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex with Masters in Business Administration from McGill University. Dr. Sharaf worked for two years as a general practitioner in the cold but fascinating communities of James Bay, Quebec. For nearly two years, he provided urgent dental care, and discovered a true passion for orthodontics. Subsequently, he completed a three-year specialty training in orthodontics at the University of Alberta, and obtained his Masters degree in Orthodontics in 2009. Dr. Sharaf is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

The ‘Clear on Codes’ course focuses on the insurance audit process, and steps dentist can take to protect themselves from being a target for audit. Aggressive billing trends and frequently misused codes are identified with emphasis on how to bill appropriately using the BCDA Suggested Fee Guide. The following topics will be discussed:

The Clinician: Dr. John West, DDS, MSD As the founder and director of the Center for Endodontics, British-born Dr. John West is recognized as one of world’s premier educators in clinical and interdisciplinary endodontics. John West received his DDS from the University of Washington where he is an Affiliate Associate Professor.  He earned his MSD in endodontics at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine while being educated by the late Professor Herbert Schilder.  John is a clinical instructor at Boston University where he has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. He has presented unrivaled endodontic continuing education in all the world’s continents while maintaining a private practice at the Center for Endodontics in Tacoma, Washington. He mentors the world’s only stand-alone four day mini-endodontic residency program at the Interdisciplinary Dental Education Academy (IDEA) in San Francisco.  John is a clinical visionary, an inventor, a teacher, an author, and an advocate for any dentist who wants to experience the successful possibilities of endodontics in his or her practice. His personal teaching style resonates with audiences as he teaches them how to achieve clinical artistry in their craft and invites them to become masterful endodontic clinicians. He co-authored Obturation of the Radicular Space with Dr. John Ingle in Ingle’s 1994 and 2002 editions of Endodontics and was senior author of Cleaning and Shaping the Root Canal System in Cohen and Burns 1994 and 1998 Pathways of the Pulp. He has authored Endodontic Predictability in Dr. Michael Cohen’s 2008 Quintessence text Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning: Principles, Design, Implementation, and Michael Cohen’s 2010 Quintessence text Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning Volume II: Comprehensive Case Studies.  He is lead author of Esthetic Management of Endodontically Treated Teeth in Dr. Ronald Goldstein’s 2017 third edition of Esthetics in Dentistry.  John’s memberships include: 2009 president and fellow of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and 2010 president of the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry, the former Northwest Network for Dental Excellence, and the International College of Dentists. He is a 2010 consultant for the ADA’s prestigious ADA Board of Trustees and is a consultant to the ADA Council on Dental Practice.  John is a member of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s Boston University Alumni Board and a Thought Leader for Carestream Digital Dental Systems.  He serves on the editorial advisory boards for: The Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, Practical Procedures and Aesthetic Dentistry. The Journal of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry, Dentistry Today, and is associate editor for Endodontic Practice/US. Objective: This presentation will initially review the traditional concept of peri-implant disease, including evidence-based risk factors. Furthermore, it will explore a newer theory, deepening our understanding of this perplexing phenomenon of bone loss around dental implants. Ultimately, the objective is to use the current science and clinical experience to provide an objective system for clinical management of peri-implant disease in our practices. Several clinical cases will be shown to highlight all concepts.
The Clinician: Dr. Norman W. Ickert, completed his general dental education at Vancouver’s University of British Columbia in 1982. He is the Director of the Ickert Dental Implant Centre, a referral practice limited to implant related dentistry. Dr. Ickert also teaches surgical implant dentistry at the Kois Centre in Seattle. Dr. Ickert is proud to limit his practice to comprehensive, aesthetic and functional rehabilitative dentistry, including both the surgical and prosthetic aspects of dental implants, as well as many other related hard and soft tissue enhancement procedures. Due to the highly challenging nature of this specific field of practice, Dr. Ickert and his team have committed themselves primarily to this aspect of dentistry. This implies continuous, comprehensive, educational, surgical, prosthetic training, with world leaders in this field, both within North America and Europe. Dr. Ickert has completed his Master’s Program in Oral Medicine and Implantology, graduating March 2012 from the University of Muenster, Germany. Dr. Ickert is also a Mentor, a Clinical Instructor, and a former Advisory Board Member at Seattle, Washington’s Kois Center. He has his IPS Mastership Certificate from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and is a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry.

Synopsis:  Do you or someone you know suffer from headaches, migraines, or other head pain?  Well you are not alone. Statistics Canada reports that a conservative estimate of 2.7 million Canadians suffer from diagnosed migraines.  The imbalance of forces that results in chronic pain and dysfunction in the head and neck area is termed dentomandibular sensorimotor dysfunction (DMSMD).  Caused by misalignment in the skull and mandible, it can result in problems with bite force, muscles, and joint balance.  We are going to explore the cause and effects of injuries on chronic head pain, and why dentists are the best and only health practitioner that can offer the comprehensive treatment for these patients.
The Clinician: Dr. Cheng Lun Wang, DDS, MSc, FRCD(C), is a Canadian Board Certified Specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and a member of American Lingual Orthodontic Association, and European Lingual Society of Orthodontists.  He is currently appointed as clinical assistant professor, graduate orthodontics program, at the University of British Columbia.  For the past 20 years, Dr. Wang has been in private practice with a particular interest in esthetic orthodontic treatment, featuring labial, lingual, and Invisalign treatment.  In 2003, Dr. Wang opened the BC Head Pain Institute to aid patients suffering from chronic pain in the head, jaw, teeth, and neck.
