Topic: “Innovations in Endodontics”

Objective: Recent understanding in the management of endodontic diseases combining with advances in materials, armamentarium and techniques, have led to a more efficient and predictable root canal treatment outcome. The Clinician: Dr. James Lin, DDS, MSc, Dip Endod, FRCD(C) obtained his dental degree with top honours from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. He worked as a general dentist for 10 years before returning to school to complete his graduate training in Endodontics and MSc degree in Craniofacial Science at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia in 2012. For the past 10 years, Dr. Lin has been involved in endodontic teaching and research at UBC and has been the recipient of numerous academic and teaching awards. Currently, Dr. Lin is the Director of Undergraduate Endodontics at UBC and maintains his private practice specializing in endodontics in Vancouver and New Westminster.

Topic:“Some Wisdom on Treatment and Management of All Types of Impacted Teeth”

Synopsis: When do we need to remove impacted teeth? When is the best time? The objectives of this lecture is to review the indications, treatment planning and risk and benefits for removal of impacted teeth. Also techniques for removal will be discussed as well as complications that can occur. Finally we will review the adjunctive methods for patient comfort during the procedure.

The Clinician:Dr. Kenneth Chow is a Certified Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with practices in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond. He recently started OMS group with Dr. Jason Choi and Dr. David Yang. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC and Assistant Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UBC and has been teaching since 1996. He is presently the Chair of the Ethics Committee at CDSBC. He is also on staff at VGH, UBC Hospital, BC Cancer Agency and involved in teaching in the GPR program. He is a mentor of the Greater Vancouver Study Club and has lectured in many conferences, CE courses, and study clubs. Ken completed his dentistry at University of Southern California and his Specialty training at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He continues to enjoy teaching others the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and other areas of Dentistry that can ultimately improve patient care.

Dr. Jason Choi is a Certified Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery who provides the full scope of surgical treatment for the oral-facial complex. Dr. Choi completed his dental education at the University of Southern California in 2003. After graduation he completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at Montefiore Medical Center in New York in 2011. He is also a member of the medical staff at BC Children’s Hospital providing emergency services. Currently Dr. Choi teaches at UBC Dental School and travels to the Queen Charlotte’s First Nation Band Dental Clinics to teach the UBC GPRs.

Dr. David Yang is the Provincial Practice Leader in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the BC Cancer Agency. He is the co-founder and co-president of the ITI Vancouver Implant Study Club. He also lectures regularly for the general practice residents, pathology residents, prostho residents and dental students at VGH & UBC. Dr. Yang received his dental degree from University of Toronto. He completed both his General Practice Residency as well as his Oral Surgery Residency at Cornell Medical Center.

Dr. James McCormackreceived his Pharmacy degree at UBC, and completed a hospital residency program at Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver. He received his Doctorate in Pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina. James has had extensive international experience speaking to health professionals and consumers about the use of medication, presenting over 300 seminars on drug therapy over the past 20 years. His focus is on informed decision-making, using evidence-based information and rational therapeutic principles. He has been an editor for two internationally recognized text books on rational drug therapy ad has published over 100 articles. James is co-host of a very popular weekly podcast called the Therapeutics Education Collaboration (TEC). It can be found at therapeuticseducation.org. He is a professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC.

Topic: Pedo 101: A Potpourri of Pediatric Pearls

Dr. John T.W. Hung is Limited to Pediatric Dentistry. He has worked only with children since graduating from dental school. Dr. Hung is a Fellow of the American Society of Dentistry for Children, a clinical assistant professor at UBC, and is on staff at BC’s Children’s Hospital. He has played a significant role in public health dentistry over the years.

Dr. Peter Y.K. Chan is a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is also a clinical assistant professor at UBC and is on staff at BC’s Children’s Hospital. Dr. Chan has served as a past-President of the BC Society of Pediatric Dentists and is currently co-President of the Chinese Canadian Dental Society of BC.

Dr. Mark F. Casafrancisco is a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is also a clinical assistant professor at UBC and is on staff at BC’s Children’s Hospital. Dr. Casafrancisco is the current President of the BC Society of Pediatric Dentists.

Dr. Ben Kang,DMD, FRCD(C), Dip ABOMS is a board-certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in both Canada and the United States of American. He finished his doctorate degree in Dental Medicine at UBC. Immediately after dental school, he practiced general dentistry in the Vancouver area and was heavily involved in implant treatment-planning/restorations. He then went on to complete his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program at Lincoln Medical Center Affiliated with Weil Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. Given his well-rounded surgical techniques and knowledge, he was invited to assume an attending physician position at the same hospital where he dedicated his time to training residents. He was also appointed to a faculty position at Weil Cornell Medical College as an instructor in clinical surgery. Currently, Dr. Kang practices in Langley and is also a member of the medical staff at Lions Gate Hospital providing trauma/emergency service.

This presentation will cover the use of a bone-level platform switch designed dental implants to achieve beautiful esthetic results in the maxillary anterior region. With a combined clinical experience of more than 56 years, Drs. Kenneth and Michelle Lee will use clinical cases to demonstrate how to manage and treatment plan esthetically demanding situations. Dr. Kenneth Lee, DDS, FRCD(C), FCDS(BC) is a certified Periodontist as well as Prosthodontist in Vancouver, BC. He did his undergraduate education at University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, his dental education at McGill University in Montreal, Que, and graduate periodontics training at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Dentists of Canada in both Periodontics and Prosthodontics, as well as a Fellow of The College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia in both Periodontics and Prosthodontics. In addition, Dr. Lee is a Fellow of The American College of Dentists, and a Fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI ) organization of Switzerland. He holds an Adjunct Professor appointment at the Faculty of Dentistry of McGill University in Montreal, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at the UBC, and formerly an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the Graduate Periodontics Program at The University of Washington in Seattle. He has lectured extensively in North America and overseas, and has been mentoring several dental study clubs for over 32 years.

Dr. Michelle M. Lee, DMD, MSD, FRCD(C), FCDS(BC), is a certified Periodontist who received her dental degree from McGill University, Montreal, Que., and subsequently completed two years of training in hospital dentistry and general practice at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Following her hospital training, Dr. Lee completed the periodontics specialty program and received her certificate in addition to a Master of Science from the University of Washington. Dr. Lee currently maintains a private periodontics practice with her father, Dr. Kenneth K.S. Lee, in Vancouver, BC, and is also a part-time clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia. Synopsis:

The presenter’s lecture will cover helpful techniques in managing dentures, partial dentures, crown and bridge cementation procedures, and implant Prosthodontics.

The Clinician:

Dr. David Bridger graduated from McGill Dental School in 1975 with the silver medal for second highest standing over the four years of dental school. He had a private practice in Montreal, Quebec for two years, and in 1979 attended the University of Washington Graduate Prosthodontic Program. This was a concentrated two and one half year post graduate program with emphasis in fixed prosthodontics (crown and bridgework) and periodontics. Since 1980 Dr. D. Bridger has conducted a private prosthodontic practice here in Vancouver. He has been the mentor of several study clubs in prosthodontics, and has lectured throughout B.C., giving one and two-day courses. Dr. D. Bridger is a Certified Specialist in Prosthodontics in B.C. and a member of the Association of Prosthodontics of Canada and the Academy of Osseointegration. He had served as the President of the B.C. Society of Prosthodontists and as the President of the B.C. Society of Dental Specialists.
